Educational Intervention for Nursing Interns to Improve the Quality of Clinical Records in the Cervical Cancer Screening Program

Objective: To evaluate the effect of an educational intervention on nursing interns to improve the quality of clinical records in the Cervical Cancer Screening Program.
Methods: A quantitative, pre-experimental, longitudinal, and prospective study was conducted from September 2023 to December 2024 at a public health institution in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Fifteen interns participated, selected using non-probability sampling. A 33-hour educational intervention was implemented, divided into three phases. A checklist was used to evaluate the completion of clinical records, based on an official format, which includes three sections: 1) unit identification, 2) patient identification, and 3) medical history. Before and after the intervention, a self-assessment survey of clinical record-keeping skills and knowledge was administered. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to analyze the data.
Results: In unit identification, the median score was 10.0 pre-intervention and 10.0 post-intervention (p < 0.001). In patient identification, the median score was 17.0 pre-intervention and 21.50 post-intervention (p < 0.001). In background information, the median score was 30.5 pre-intervention and 32.0 post-intervention (p = 0.026). Nursing interns' self-perception of knowledge and skills increased after the educational intervention: knowledge improved from 60.0% at a good level to 46.7% excellent and 13.3% good, and skills improved from 40.0% very good to 66.7% very good.
Conclusions: The educational intervention is effective in improving the quality of clinical records prepared by nursing interns in the Cervical Cancer Screening Program
