De acuerdo con Sen la calidad de vida debe evaluarse en términos de la capacidad de un individuo para lograr funcionamientos valiosos. La cuantía o valor de estos funcionamientos es subjetiva, pero los mismos comprenden desde la capacidad que tiene el individuo para nutrirse, para proveerse un lugar donde vivir hasta aquellos que le permiten adquirir “valores” o simplemente participar en la vida individual o de la comunidad. Precisamente del funcionamiento del ser humano en interacción con sus congéneres los autores desarrollan una explicación funcionalista y química de cómo reacciona el cerebro, qué necesidades tiene que cubrir el ser humano para sobrevivir. Al final se llegará a una conclusión limitadamente innovadora, pero que a los seres humanos nos cuesta trabajo poner en práctica de una forma sistemática, al margen de cualquier vivencia ya sea contaminada por la convivencia con nuestra propia especie o atribuible a aspectos ontogenéticos.
