Objective: To recognize the health promotion strategies in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus of the Family Health Units of the Limpio district, 2022.
Methodology: Quantitative, descriptive, observational approach with two sequential assessments. 299 subjects were selected from the Prevention Program and Chronic Care Model for the Family Health Units of Limpio, a project of the KOICA agency, “HEFA ‘Health for All’”, particularly from the subprogram for chronic patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, of 19 family health units in the city of Limpio. The data recorded in the Project’s computer program was used. The included patients were characterized and the guidelines given by the physicians as a strategy for promoting health were subsequently described. In addition, two assessments (before/after) were made in terms of anthropometric measurements and habits.
Results: Of the total of 299 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 15.72% had a history of diabetes. Regarding the orientations, 45.82% received some type of orientation on healthy habits, 38.46% on physical activity, 11.71% on alcohol consumption and 35.45% on the consumption of medicines. Only 2 cases of complications were recorded, which corresponded to diabetic foot. It was recorded that there was not a change in habits between the first and last consultation for the exercise habit.
Conclusion: Regarding the health promotion strategies that were found from the perspective of public health, this program focused on orientations and permanent education of patients in each consultation, monitoring compliance with them.
