Abstract

On previous occasions, we have insisted that health programs in large cities necessarily have very special characteristics because the problems generated in them have modalities that are not repeated in smaller localities or in rural areas. We consider that this approach is valid not only for medical care or personal care but also for aspects related to environmental sanitation, which in turn includes all those actions aimed at protecting the individual from the aggressive environment insofar as it may constitute a risk to his or her health (ecological balance).
The traditional and basic problems of environmental sanitation are constituted by:
1. The provision of sufficient water, in quantity and quality.
2. Disposal of excreta and sewage.
3. Garbage collection and disposal.

4. Drug control.
5. Insect and rodent control.
6. Sanitary quality of housing.
7. Control of environmental contamination, which includes soil, water and air.
8. Food quality control.
9. Control of zoonoses, i.e., those diseases derived from animals that can affect humans.
10. Occupational hygiene, which includes the prevention of the risks arising from the execution of certain tasks.
certain tasks.
11. Prevention of traffic accidents.
