PREVALENCIA DE HIPERTENSION ARTERIAL EN CONDUCTORES DE BUSES URBANOS DE LA CIUDAD DE MEDELLIN (1)
Abstract
Arterial hypertension is one of the so-called “modern” diseases, reaching truly alarming figures. High blood pressure is a contributing factor in the mortality of cardiovascular, renal and cerebrovascular diseases (1).
In Colombia, 9.60/0 of the population had systolic blood pressure values higher than 160 mm Hg and 9.20/0 had diastolic pressure values higher than 95 mm Hg. Both systolic and diastolic pressures show a clear upward trend with increasing age (3). Likewise, hypertension occupies a preponderant place among the six leading causes of death due to the aforementioned pathologies (4).
Epidemiological studies carried out in different countries have found many risk factors involved in the etiology of hypertension; in other words, there is no defined basic cause.
