Effectiveness of the monovalent rotavirus vaccine in areas of high morbidity and mortality due to diarrhea in Cartagena, Leticia, Neiva, Pitalito, and Valledupar, Colombia 2011 - 2012

La diarrea sigue siendo una causa importante de morbilidad y mortalidad a nivel mundial. Se estima que cada año entre 1,6 y 2,5% de los niños menores de cinco años mueren por causas relacionadas con la diarrea. El rotavirus es uno de los agentes infecciosos más importantes asociados a la diarrea y se ha estimado que causa entre el 30 y el 50% de casos de diarrea en busca de atención de salud en todo el mundo. Fue identificado desde 1973 como uno de los agentes causantes de diarrea más importantes de gastroenteritis en lactantes y niños pequeños. Es asociado con la aparición anual de más de 100 millones de casos de diarrea, 2 millones de hospitalizaciones y 400.000 muertes en todo el mundo.
