Abstract

Cesarean section has always been a very important element in the quality of obstetric care; nevertheless, the frequency with which it is performed Is very high in many countries, including Colombia; this issue was debated in this article. Different arguments regarding the cesarean section were analyzed; they were divided into the scientific ones, the possibly scientific ones, the myths in obstetric care, the psychology of the obstetrician, and the non-scientific reasons that are related to the convenience for the physician and to the pressures that society exerts on him or her, which includes the threat of malpractice suits.
