Abstract

Introduction: Primary care is the foundation of an effective health system; therefore, it is necessary to evaluate its performance from the population's perspective with validated and easily administered instruments.

Objective: To adapt and validate the 10-item Primary Care Assessment Tool for adults (PCAT-A10) in the Peruvian population.

Methods: An instrumental study developed in primary care centers in a health region of Peru was conducted, in which 960 users participated. The process considered adjustments to the terminology of some questions, an evaluation of their content and their metric properties.

Results: We obtained a reduced version of nine items grouped into a single general factor, that explained 41.89% of the total variance and an appropriate fit (χ²/gl = 4.41; NNFI = 0.958; CFI = 0.968; RMSEA = 0.060; 90% CI: 0,049 - 0,071). The nine items discriminated in a convenient way, as well as the global scale, according to health perception, age and health center of origin. The predictive and convergent validity was adequate, as well as the internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega (0.790).

Conclusions: The newly adapted version, PCAT-A9, exhibits acceptable metric properties. Its use in research and validation studies is recommended.
