Abstract

Defibrillation is an emergency procedure and the only effective therapy for ventricular fibrillation. Electrical defibrillation delivers large amounts of current to the myocardium and thus depolarizes it, terminating ventricular fibrillation and other arrhythmias.

A defibrillator is a device that administers a controlled electrical shock, allowing the operator to select a variable current at the precise moment, according to patient‘s condition. Understanding defibrillator‘s operation leads to more effective resuscitation rates and more therapeutic alternatives in patients with any cardiac electric disturbance.
