Taking the theoretical approaches provided by Pierre Bourdieu, Jacques Dubois, Pascale Casanova and Rafael Gutiérrez Girardot as a basis, this article establishes a set of methodological principles not only for the analysis of an intellectual’s career path, but also of his stance in relation to aesthetic, economic and political fields, according to his position in society. This stance is covered in three ways: firstly, the position of the intellectual as part of the cultural institution; secondly the position of the aforementioned cultural institution in field of political power; and thirdly, the position that the country in question occupies in the world map of cultural production. Ultimately, the article proposes a blueprint for the explanation of the possible pathways that a Colombian intellectual could have followed between entering onto the scene at the end of the 19th Century, and the present day.
