About the Journal
Focus and scope
Estudios de Derecho (Law Studies) is a biannual publication of the University of Antioquia’s Faculty of Law and Political Sciences. It contributes to debates of ideas around law and politics and fosters dialog with other disciplines. The journal prioritizes the publication of research articles written by national and international authors. It is aimed at political scientists, lawyers and, generally, professionals interested in the social fields of knowledge.
The articles must be original and must not have been simultaneously submitted to another journal. To evaluate academic rigor and scientific quality, articles are double blind peer-reviewed. Reviewers will assess the article’s relevance, scientific contribution, originality and compliance with ethical principles under the guidelines of the Publications Ethics Committee (COPE). The authors’ proposals should not involve the University of Antioquia’s Faculty of Law and Political Sciences.

Journal history
Estudios de Derecho journal is one of Colombia’s leading legal journals. It has accompanied the intellectual development of the University of Antioquia’s Faculty of Law and Political Sciences since 1912, when it was founded by Professor Fernando Vélez, who graduated in 1866, and student Francisco de Paula Pérez, who would graduate as a lawyer in 1915 , after having founded the El Colombiano newspaper, also in 1912.
Estudios de Derecho was jointly edited by students and professors until 1936. As a result of the political events arising from the transformative ideas of President López Pumarejo, that year saw a disturbance of university life that gave rise to the founding of Universidad Bolivariana by a group of members of the University of Antioquia’s Faculty of Law and Political Sciences.
In 1939, the journal returned under the vice-chancellorship of Doctor Ricardo Uribe Escobar, under the direction of Doctor Enrique Giraldo Zuluaga. The journal’s activity from that year to the present day is known as the journal’s second epoch.
The journal’s pages have included submissions from the pens of Orlando Fals Borda, Juan Zuleta Ferrer, Carlos Gaviria Díaz, Hernando Agudelo Villa, Luigi Ferrajoli, Miguel Moreno Jaramillo, Eduardo Rodríguez Piñeres, Hernán Toro Agudelo, Alfredo Vásquez Carrizosa, Ángel Martín Vásquez, Gilberto Alzate Avendaño, Luis López de Mesa, Cayetano Betancur, Hernando Davis Echandía, Darío Echandía, Raimundo Emiliani Román, y Jorge Enrique Gutiérrez Anzola.
Likewise, countless authors’ work has been reviewed, including Eduardo Berstein, Thomas Hobbes, Ortega and Gasset, Giorgio del Vecchio, Hans Kelsen, Tomas Moro, Carlos Cossio, Cayetano Betancur, Felice Bataglia, Emmanuel Kant, Cesar Beccaria, Luis Recaséns Siches, Ronald Dworkin, amongst others, proponents of various theories within the sphere of “Legal literature”, “Forensic literature” and “Philosophy of law”.
From 1959 to 2003, the journal was directed by professor, sociologist, philosopher, lawyer and humanist Benigno Mantilla Pineda, who was subsequently relieved by Professor Raúl Humberto Ochoa Carvajal. Later, this publication was directed by Professor Olga Lopera, Amaya Querejazu, Lina Adarve Calle, Luisa Fernanda Cano and is currently directed by David Orrego Fernández.
It is a biannual journal and it continues to follow the objectives outlined in 1939: “To make the journal an instrument of expression for professors and students of legal sciences and related fields, a means of exchange with similar publications from Colombia, America and the world to enrich legal literature and to keep up-to-date legal information and professional knowledge”
That is why articles related to law, politics and political philosophy are published in the journal, through essays and research papers that are assessed by academic peers once they have been submitted.
