Authority, punishment, and impunity

The figures of authority have two basic functions: to enforce compliance with the law and to provide subjects with a symbolic referent. These functions are legitimized by a community. The first function, ensuring compliance with the law, involves the need to impose limits as a way to stop the repetition of offensive acts, but also as a way of making others aware of the consequences of violating agreements. The second function implies protecting subjects from being treated as a waste of culture. However, these functions may fail and let impunity reign, thus allowing the return of the cruelest forms of making justice between fellow human beings.
