Puesto que la diversidad cultural continúa siendo una parte sobresaliente de la vida estadounidense, necesitamos examinar cómo los procesos cognitivos de culturas diferentes organizan el conocimiento para tener sentido del mundo. Richard Nisbett analiza los diferentes modelos de pensamiento encontrados en las culturas Occidentales y Orientales. Él explora los dos tipos de cognición a través de una lente multidisciplinaria compuesta de filosofía, historia, psicología social, lingüística, y cognición, y las implicaciones que el entendimiento de tales diferencias podría tener sobre las relaciones internacionales.
