Abstract

Between April and September 2003, sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and Brachiaria arrecta oxygen demand weremeasured in situ at the dammed zone in La Vega Stream (Antioquia), Colombia. SOD was determined as described by Rounds and Doyle in 1997 with some modifications. During 4 hours, dissolved oxygen was measured every 30 minutes. The oxygen demand of this species was determined using a system of cylinders (10 cm diameter and 50cm high); dissolved oxygen was measured every hour. SOD, B. arrecta's oxygen demand and water oxygen demand measurements ranged between 0.37-1.07 gm-2day-1, 5.43-8.28 x 10-4 ggbiomass-1day-1, and 8.70-144.4 x 10-4 gl-1day-1, respectively. Results suggest that the factors responsible of the significant reduction of dissolved oxygen in the water column are massive growth of B. arrecta in the riverbed, respiration and decomposition processes of B. arrecta, and stream flow reduction. In contrast, SOD is not important on this oxygen reduction
