The Ethnographic Halls in the National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico

Based on my experience as curator and ethnographer at the National Museum of Anthropology (Mexico) and its comparison with other partially or totally ethnographic museums, I offer a critical vision of the exhibitions dedicated to contemporary indigenous peoples. Following some of the central postulates of the critical museology, I focus on the need to renounce the nationalist ideals of “identity” and “fidelity”, as well as the urgency of prioritizing the exhibition of the process of ethnographic estrangement. Finally, I emphasize the need to break with the modern timeline in order to promote exclusively ethnographic exhibition spaces.
