Abstract. This article is not an introduction to a contemporary sociologist who is acknowledged for his creative and prolific work. It is closer to a part of an intellectual biography of Zygmunt Bauman since it tries to link texts and specific contexts. Throughout a discontinuous course of topics, this work goes back to the middle of the 1950’s to find certain roots of his thought, and reaches the 1990’s to accent his
cultural and figurative discourse. Finally, it stresses two features of Baumanian literature: the first refers to memory as an ethical horizon from which emerges a postulated identity; the second is related to the way certain concepts such as “limit” and “transgression” have proved to be fruitful for the hermeneutical position on the modernity of contemporary social life.
