Los académicos de Colombia opinaron en forma casi unánime que la crisis actual de sistema de seguridad social en salud está en su momento de mayor severidad; crisis que se manifiesta en la agudización de los problemas estructurales, ya sea relacionados con la ineficiente gestión de los recursos, manifestada en la contradicción entre un incremento ostensible del gasto en salud mientras los indicadores trazadores del estado de salud en la población más vulnerable muestran un retroceso preocupante; también es evidente el malestar ciudadano por un sistema que está a espaldas de las necesidades, derechos y demandas de la ciudadanía, mientras que las acciones de regulación gubernamental mantienen intacto el esquema de aseguramiento basado en la existencias de intermediarios que no agregan valor al sector de la salud, pero si le restan importantes recursos por vía de la administración, la obtención de beneficios económicos y en algunos casos por cuenta de la corrupción. Es un sistema que hace aguas mientras el alto gobierno insiste en sostenerlo a pesar de las evidencias que sugieren caminos diferentes para superar la crisis y es imperativo un gran acuerdo nacional para salir de la crisis.
