Abstract

Objective: to explore how social and lifestyle determinants are associated with the access to dental services among pregnant women from Cali, Valle. Methodology: a cross-sectional study was conducted with 993 mothers who were in the immediate puerperium in public and private clinics in the city of Cali, Colombia. Likewise, a logistic regression was used to assess the association between the socioeconomic variables and the act of visiting the dentist during pregnancy adjusted for variables regarding the mothers’ lifestyles in terms of oral health. Results: the rate of attendance to dental appointments during pregnancy was 83%, and the distribution was unequal. The women who attended in greater proportion were contributors to the healthcare system (88.7%, OR = 2.4 CI95% = 1.7 to 3.4), had completed secondary or higher education (88%, OR = 2.6 CI95% = 1.8 to 3.6%), higher grades regarding oral health knowledge (61.9%, OR = 2.2 CI95% = 1.6-3.1), lower risk of having a cariogenic diet (73.6 , OR = 2.6 CI95% = 1.9 to 3.7), and better hygienic practices (83.4, OR = 2.4 CI95% = 1.6 to 3.5). Discussion: social determinants such as the socioeconomic and lifestyle levels were associated with the pregnant mothers’ access to dental services. Additionally, the oral health lifestyle, which is related to knowledge, dietary habits, beliefs, and oral hygiene practices, showed differences that depended on the socioeconomic level of the mother.
