Objective: To explore the frequency of the presence of symptoms of eating disorders and food intake in women seeking body contouring procedures in an aesthetic center in Medellin-Colombia.
Methodology: Cross-sectional study, with 107 women aged 18 to 50 years. Anthropometric data were collected and the Spanish version of the Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire was implemented. Data were analyzed using relative frequencies and summary measures and a bivariate analysis was performed. Logistic regression models were constructed, with global significance as the dependent variable.
Results: There was clinical significance for risk of eating disorders and food intake disorders in 6.5 % of the women and in each subscale of the questionnaire (restraint: 3.7 %; preoccupation with food: 4.7 %; figure: 36.4 %; and weight: 20.6 %). Ninety-eight percent reported at least one symptom related to eating disorders and food intake disorders. Statistical significance was found between age, body mass index and overall clinical significance of the questionnaire. When considering figure concern as a dependent variable, statistical significance was identified for waist circumference rp = 1.14 (1.07-1.21).
Conclusion: There is presence of symptoms and probable cases of eating disorders and food intake disorders in women seeking body contouring procedures, finding concern about their figure and performing behaviors that may affect their health. It is suggested to implement screening protocols to confirm the possible occurrence of these disorders and attend them in a timely manner.
