Objective: To identify the consistency and internal validity of the scale for modern racism adapted by the authors in university students in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
Methodology: Two studies were designed to validate the scale, in which 250 students from a Colombian university participated. Psychometric performance was evaluated, in the first study, by means of internal consistency, exploratory factor analysis, parallel analysis, and analyses based on eigenvalues and factor acceleration; and in the second study, by means of confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistency.
Results: The adapted version of the 10-item modern racism scale applied in the first study exhibited a poor four-dimensional and two-dimensional model, and an acceptable one-dimensional model, with one factor responsible for 32.83% of the total variance, a mediocre internal consistency and an acceptable internal structure. The adapted and reduced version of the same scale (items 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8) presented a main factor that explained 50.24% of the total variance, a satisfactory internal consistency, an acceptable internal structure and satisfactory goodness-of-fit indicators.
Conclusions: The adapted and reduced version of the scale for modern racism, elaborated by the authors, shows a better performance than the original version adapted to Hispanic American Spanish. This research provides a reduced instrument capable of evaluating a construct such as modern racism in a population sample with a high incidence in Colombian territory (Venezuelan migrants).
