ENFOQUE Y MANEJO DE LA ENFERMEDAD MENTAL EN LA EXPERIENCIA DEL HOSPITAL PSIQUIATRICO DE BOYACA
Abstract
Allow me to begin this short paper with the following words of Michel Foucault, written 19 years ago: “In reality, because historical alienation is the primary condition of illness, psychological and juridical alienation has become the sanction of illness. In a society like ours, the insane person shows himself, in effect, as a living contradiction, and with all the violence of an insult. The bourgeois revolution has defined man's humanity by a theoretical freedom and an abstract equality. And the mentally ill person becomes the subject of scandal: He is the demonstration that the concrete man is not entirely defined by the system of abstract rights that are theoretically recognized, since the system does not accommodate this human eventuality that is the disease, and that for the mentally ill freedom is vain and equality has no meaning.... It shows that bourgeois society, because of the same conflicts that have made its illness possible, is not made to the measure of the real man; that it is abstract in relation to the concrete man and his conditions of existence; that it continually puts in conflict the unitary idea that is made of man and the contradictory status that it grants him. The mentally ill person is the apotheosis of this conflict. And if by the myth of mental alienation he is expelled to the outer limits of the city, it is in order not to see in him the scandalous expression of his contradictions, which have made possible his illness...
