Abstract

This article is motivated by the growing concern in Latin America about the abandonment of specialized epidemiological practice. This practice has been replaced by the emergence of surveillance systems in a conceptual sense. For various reasons, the new concept has not taken root in the Latin American reality, which means that it has not been translated into a new epidemiological practice.
The aim of this paper is to clarify the determinants of these changes.
For this reason, an attempt is made to make a critical analysis of the historical process of the concept of epidemiological surveillance and to interpret the way in which epidemiological surveillance is inscribed in the Latin American reality. At the same time, to discuss the inadequacies and limitations of the classical epidemiological method in the interpretation of health-disease processes as they occur in the Latin American reality and to attempt a work proposal in the search for solutions to the problems posed.
