Abstract

On April 25, the Director of the General Hospital of Medellin requested in writing advice to control an outbreak that had been occurring in the Neonatology Service (Premature Babies Ward) since April 7 and 8 (see Annex 1), characterized by high mortality and the presentation of diarrhea, vomiting and occasional fever; in spite of the efforts made, it had not been possible to clarify the causes of the outbreak.
An interdisciplinary group from the National School of Public Health, made up of an epidemiologist, a Nutrition and Dietetics graduate with a Master's degree in Public Health, a bacteriologist and a Pharmaceutical Chemist, specialized in Food Hygiene, was sent to the Hospital.
Upon contacting the Hospital Director, the Pediatricians and other personnel reported their concern about the unusual increase in morbidity in the Neonatology Department, especially on Holy Thursdays and Fridays.
The report of the Pediatricians and the review of the clinical records showed the clinical picture already described and also patients who in the morning were in acceptable conditions, in the afternoon presented symptoms and “frequently died with enterocolitis with bloody stools, a clinical picture compatible with disseminated intravascular coagulopathy and occasionally thermal pictures”.
