Abstract

I am grateful for the honorable invitation of the International Health Committee to discuss my collaborative experiences especially in reference to the Third World. As they cover a period of more than 4 decades of activity in most of the countries of the Continent, I must limit myself to certain aspects, orienting my discussion to the particular interest of the North American audience. This is due not so much to the size of your representation on this Panel as to the weight that your opinions and attitudes will continue to carry in the near future in international health activities. The younger among you, especially, will not fully grasp the depth and extent of the dependence of Latin America, for example, on the patterns of life in the United States and the general scope of its culture.
Twenty years ago, as an official of the Pan American Health Organization's Central Office, I had the privilege of participating in a systematic way in the orientation of North American health professionals destined to work abroad. This allowed me an inside view of your prevailing prejudices and misconceptions regarding the cultural and socioeconomic interrelationships of the United States and the rest of the world. It was apparent that many of your colleagues of that period had not been prepared to understand and deal with the kinds of health problems and general conditions they would encounter.
