INVESTIGACION INTERAMERICANA DE MORTALIDAD EN LA NIÑEZ EN LA CIUDAD DE MEDELLIN
Abstract
Se presenta la Investigación Interamericana de Mortalidad en la Niñez, realizada en el área urbana de Medellín, la segunda ciudad de Colombia, cuya economía se basa en industria y comercio y con una población de 974,600 habitantes en 1968. El objetivo fue el de conocer las características de la mortalidad en los niños menores de 5 años residentes en dicha área, así como los factores condicionantes de este hecho vital.
Se estudió el 330/0 de los niños fallecidos menores de 5 años, una muestra probabilística de la población de niños vivos menores de 5 años y el 1000/o de los nacimientos. Se presentan problemas tales como insuficiencia de recursos, dificultad para hallar las direcciones, deficiencias en los registros de defunciones y de nacimientos y defectos de los registros médicos.
La mayoría de los hallazgos encontrados constituyen hechos importantes antes no bien conocidos, a través de los estudios disponibles. Sinembargo, es necesario profundizar aún más en investigaciones en varios de los campos todavía no bien esclarecidos. Los resultados de esta investigación serán de gran utilidad para la planificación y evaluación de los programas de servicios de salud y de formación y adiestramiento de personal para los mismos.
