Abstract

The theme of State and Health is central to the discussion of problems related to the modern form of social organization of health practices. In fact, the State, capital and labor in health form a triangle that should be the object of any analysis inspired by the principles and methods of the social sciences.
Taking as an object the case of Brazil and the evolution of its health services structure in recent years, the following are some observations on the effects suffered by the health workforce due to the progressive intervention of the State in this area.
The data and results to be presented are the result of research conducted by the Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública and the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais with the support of the Pan American Health Organization. The data are largely unpublished and were obtained from a survey on health facilities conducted every year by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
