Abstract

In the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, North - West department, Medellín Headquarters, a research was made about the management of medical forensic solid residues, generated in the legal medical and forensic science process, which are done in these places; through the recognition of the administrative and operative actions of the system, and the description of handling, classification and quantification of these residues for each one of the areas of services which conform the Institute. The results on this research allowed to determine deficiencies in the staff knowledge related to the principles for the right handling of medical forensic solid residues generated by the Institute and the health risks that they can cause. Furthermore, the data collected from weighting the medical forensic solid residues, determined a daily average production of 440 gr. of solid residues per service, from which, 66% were dangerous; produced principally in the necropsies rooms. The results all owed to establish a model to improve the management of these solids residues and in that way reduce the health and environment impact and at the same time
provide institutional benefits.
