Producción y manejo de los residuos sólidos en el Hospital General de Medellín, Colombia, 2000

Se analizó el sistema de manejo de los residuos sólidos en el Hospital General de Medellín Luz Castro de Gutiérrez, con el fin de establecer pautas de gestión que permitieran evitar riesgos en salud de la población hospitalaria y reducir los impactos ambientales negativos. La recolección de la información se realizó en un periodo de 35 días, en los cuales se determino la, producción y clasificación de los residuos sólidos en la institución y por ares de servicio. La producción se obtuvo mediante el pesaje por áreas de servicio, respetando el código de colores de la legislación colombiana y utilizando la clasificación adoptada para la investigación. En conclusión, las áreas de hospitalización clínica, quirúrgica y el servicio de alimentación presentaron los mayores riesgos ocupacionales y a la vez fuero las de mayor producción de residuos. El riesgo con mayor frecuencia que se encontró fue el relacionado con pinchazos y cortaduras, dentro de los riesgos mecánicos.
