Existe evidencia irrefutable que vincula la salud de las poblaciones y de los individuos con su solvencia económica o al menos con ingreso. Las poblaciones de los países ricos viven más y experimentan tasas mas bajas de muchas enfermedades, traumas y trastornos de las poblaciones de los países pobres, sin embargo hay alertas importantes en esta ecuación que iguala riqueza y salud. Existe evidencia creciente de que tan sostenible sea el uso de los recursos naturales de un país y que tan equitativa sea la distribución de sus riquezas como los más poderosos predictores de la salud de la población. La desigualdad entre las razones d salud es compleja, e involucra tanto condiciones materiales como efecto sicosociales y físicos sobre al forma den que los individuos interpretan su lugar en la jerarquía social. Por el contrario hay evidencia que cada vez mayor de que la pobreza es el mayor determinante de enfermedad en las poblaciones. Desde la perspectiva de aquellos a quienes nos interesa la salud y el bienestar de las poblaciones y de nuestro planeta, el comercio debe impulsarse hasta el punto que pueda aliviar la pobreza, pero solamente la riqueza se reparte equitativamente en las poblaciones y entre los países, y si no se crea a expensas del sostenimiento de los cada vez más frágiles ecosistemas de nuestro planeta.
