The Revista Facultad Nacional de Salud Pública will promote the reception of manuscripts on special topics around emerging or high impact public health issues, within an accelerated publication process, maintaining the established policies of scientific quality, rigor of the editorial process, good scientific and ethical practices.

It is an accelerated publication process through the invitation to one or two thematic editors of recognized trajectory, the definition of a deadline for receipt of manuscripts and the identification of peer reviewers with expertise in the subject. The editorial process of pre-analysis, blind peer review, correction, publication and dissemination follows the same guidelines as for regular articles.

Expedited publication will be facilitated by strict adherence to the manuscript preparation instructions by the authors. The publication of manuscripts on special topics will be published as part of the themes and will include an editorial on the contribution of the topic to public health. The periodicity of publication of special topics will be defined by the editorial committee as part of the work plan.

Topic editors will be invited at the discretion of the editorial board. Topic editors will not receive any personal favors or remuneration from sponsors, as established by the current policy of funding and editorial independence of the FNSP Journal, following the guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

1. Overview

The Revista Facultad Nacional de Salud Pública (National Faculty of Public Health Journal) acknowledges the importance of integrity and transparency in scientific research, as well as the compliance with open access and data availability in its published articles. Based on these precepts, we establish this policy for the sharing of research data to promote replicability and data reusability and collaborative scientific practice, also allowing the increase of visibility and impact of the work of researchers.

According to Minciencias (Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation), "Research Data Management (RDM) is an important practice for both institutions and researchers and an integral part of any research process. It encompasses all aspects of acquisition, organization, storage, processing, transformation, visualization, use, licensing, and publication of data used or generated during a research project (management of data throughout all phases of the research project.)” [1]

Additionally, it achieves essential objectives for the scientific community, such as:

  • Strengthening open scientific research.
  • Promoting diversity of analysis and opinions.
  • Promoting new research and testing new or alternative hypotheses and analytical methods.
  • Support research on data collection and measurement methods.
  • Facilitating the training of new researchers.

This journal adheres to the criteria established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) concerning the treatment of research data. https://www.icmje.org/icmje-recommendations.pdf

2. How to deposit

Researchers should share their research data in recognized public repositories or institutional repositories. They should ensure that they comply with the FAIR principles, which are a set of guidelines that aim to improve the accessibility and reuse of digital data.

Authors will be asked to provide the link to the deposited dataset if the manuscript is approved for publication. When specific legal or ethical restrictions prohibit public sharing of the dataset, authors should indicate the reasons or how it can be accessed..

Data deposit will only be requested for research articles.

3. Data repository selection

Authors are encouraged to select repositories that are aligned with data management best practices and that facilitate data access and reuse. Repositories can be subject-specific repositories that accept specific types of structured data or generalist interdisciplinary repositories that accept multiple types of data.

In the area of health sciences, there are several recognized and widely used data repositories that are suitable for depositing research datasets. Some of the most recommended repositories are:

Figshare

Dryad

Mendeley Data

Open Science Framework

In the registry re3data.org (Registry of Research Data Repositories) a list of recommended repositories by subject area and data type can be found.

4. Data to be shared

Authors are expected to share all relevant and necessary data to support and replicate all study findings reported in the article, as well as related metadata and methods. These include files in excel, pdf, jpg, png, csv, jstor, etc.

5. Data restrictions

Authors must comply with all ethical and legal regulations applicable to the treatment of data involving human subjects, including obtaining informed consent and anonymity of participants when appropriate. Sensitive data should be handled with the highest degree of confidentiality, anonymization, and security. To ensure this, the following data should not be shared:

  • Name, initials, physical address
  • Internet Protocol (IP) address
  • Specific dates (birth dates, death dates, test dates, etc.)
  • Contact information such as phone number or email address
  • Location data

6. Data Retention Period

Research data should be retained for a sufficient period to allow verification and reuse of the results and in accordance with the repository's policies. If a repository reaches the end of its data deposit period, the data should be migrated to another repository.

7. Data Updating

Authors are responsible for keeping deposited datasets updated, especially if errors are discovered or corrections are made in the analysis. These should be deposited as a new dataset.

8. Data Reuse by Others

The deposited data are available for reuse by other researchers, if the original source is properly cited and the terms of use of the repository are respected. This contributes to the development of a common knowledge base, in which the available database serve as a source for new discoveries and practical applications in the field of public health.

Peer Reviewing Data

Databases will not be subject to evaluation by the Journal. Authors are responsible for the data they deposit in the respective repository or in their archives.

10. Citation of Data

Authors are expected to properly cite the database used in both their research and that of other research, providing the necessary information to identify and access the deposited data.

Example of how to cite research database using the Vancouver Referencing Style:

Author(s). Title of the dataset [dataset]. Repository name. Year. DOI or URL

Smith J, Johnson A. Dataset on the effects of exercise on cardiovascular health [dataset]. Dryad Digital Repository; 2023. https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.XXXX

The Editorial Committee of the journal may remove an article from the editorial or publication process if there is a breach of the editorial ethics established by it, based on the guidelines of COPE. These may include:

  • a). Failure to comply with the deadlines established for sending the corrected version of the manuscript and the delivery of the response letter to the evaluators.
  • b). If it is identified that the manuscript submitted to the journal has been published or submitted partially or totally in another national or international journal.
  • c). If in the process of evaluating the manuscript it is found that the data or results presented in the research were altered or manipulated.

The authors, in consideration of the economic effort and hard work that the editorial management process implies for the editorial team and the reviewers, will commit to continue the process responsibly until its completion. In any case, if they wish to withdraw the manuscript, the corresponding author must send a letter signed by all the authors to the editor formally stating the desire to withdraw it and the reasons for this decision. Before submitting the article to another journal, you must wait for the confirmation response of the withdrawal of the article from the editorial process of the National Faculty of Public Health Journal.
