ENFERMEDAD Y SOCIEDAD
Abstract
The puppet had been hanged: the Fairy (...) sent for the most famous doctors in the neighborhood. And the doctors arrived quickly, one after the other: that is to say, a Raven, an Owl and a talking Cricket arrived.
-I would like to know from you, gentlemen,” said the Fairy, addressing the three doctors gathered around Pinocchio's bed, ”I would like to know from you, gentlemen, whether this wretched puppet is dead or alive!
The Raven, at this request, was the first to approach; he took Pinocchio's pulse, then his nose, then his little toe. And when he had felt it well, well, he solemnly pronounced these words:
-In my judgment, the puppet is well and truly dead; but if unfortunately it were not, there would be a sure indication that it is always alive!
-I am displeased,” said the Owl, ”to have to contradict the Raven, my illustrious friend and colleague: for me, on the other hand, the puppet is always alive; but if unfortunately it were not, then it would be a sign that it is really dead.
-And you say nothing?” asked the Fairy to the talking Cricket.
-I say that the prudent doctor, when he does not know what he is saying, the best thing he can do is to keep quiet.
