We present a series of 1.044 superficial mycotic lesions, diagnosed in 915 patients at the Medical Mycology Laboratory, University of Antioquia, Medellín, Colombia, during a period of 18 months (March 1988 through August 1989); the most frequent diagnoses were dermatophytosis (53.6%) and candidiasis (31.0%); pytiriasis, trichosporiasis, mixed infections and infections due to saprophytic fungi were also found; based on these data we emphasize the following aspects: a) the high sensitivity of direct examination for the purpose of mycologic diagnoses; b) the high frequency of mixed and saprophytic infections.
