Abstract

Introduction: In Colombia, the malaria transmission is heterogeneous and variable intensity in regional scale. In the Caribbean region, low-intensity transmission and high receptivity are recorded.

Objectives: stratify the malaria risk transmission in the Colombian Caribbean region 2008-2020.

Methodology: A descriptive and retrospective study in 167 municipalities, based on secondary sources. The stratification methodology of the Pan American Health Organization was adapted. Measures of absolute frequency and relative frequency were used as percentages, proportion of parasitic species and the annual parasitic index median.

Results: The 77% of the municipalities (128) were classified in risk stratum 2, 19% in risk stratum 3 (31) and 5% in risk stratum 4 (8), the latter located in the departments of Bolívar and La Guajira. In the region 31.198 malaria cases were notified, 84.1% due to P. vivax. 75% were reported by the departments of Bolivar (seven municipalities) and La Guajira (one municipality).

Conclusions: The distribution of malaria risk transmission in this region is heterogeneous and localized. The territory presents favorable conditions for the transmission of the disease. These findings are inputs for decision-making.
