Abstract

Introduction: Appendectomy is the most common emergency surgical procedure in pediatric patients, with laparoscopy being the preferred approach, showing favorable outcomes compared to the open technique, due to the lower occurrence of intra-abdominal abscesses, surgical site infections, hospital stay, postoperative ileus, reintervention, and hospital readmission.

Objectives: To evaluate the outcomes of laparoscopic appendectomies in pediatric patients in some hospitals in Antioquia.

Methods: Retrospective observational descriptive study of patients under 15 years of age undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy for pediatric surgery at San Vicente Fundación Children’s Hospital, Hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe, and Somer Clinic, evaluating the demographic, clinical, paraclinical, and surgical characteristics, as well as their results.

Results: A total of 605 laparoscopic appendectomies were performed, finding a conversion rate of 0.3%, 7% of hospital readmission, and 8% of complications. There is no evidence of mortality, and an association was found between complications, appendiceal perforation and reintervention with the time of day in which the appendectomy was performed.

Conclusions: Laparoscopic appendectomy is a safe approach for pediatric age, with low rates of complications and reintervention.
