Introduction: Children’s feeding practices during their initial thousand days of life have an impact on their nutrition and development.
Objective: To explore the effect of feeding practices on anthropometric measurements in a pediatric population under 24 months in Colombia.
Methods: A descriptive observational study was conducted using data from the Feeding and Nutritional Profile of Antioquia. Furthermore, we analyzed socioeconomical aspects, anthropometric measurements as well as infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices, and we applied a logistic regression model to identify the proposed effect.
Results: Of the 265 records, early initiation of breastfeeding was found in 80% of them, exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months in 43.5%, and continuous breastfeeding up to 2 years in 12.5%. The minimum dietary diversity was 62.1% and the minimally acceptable diet was 42.9%. The prevalence of wasting, stunting and overweight was 2.6%, 6.4% and 6.4%, respectively.
Conclusions: Non-adherence to feeding practices such as early initiation of breastfeeding, predominantly breastfeeding before 6 months of age, consumption of iron-rich or iron-fortified foods and sanitary factors such as lack of drinking water could have an effect on stunting and wasting in children under 24 months of age.
