Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin structurally related to prostaglandin E1. It is mainly used to prevent peptic ulcer disease induced by ingestion of nonesteroidal antinflammatory agents. However, it has been shown to cause uterine contractions. The purpose of this review is to analize several published studies dealing with its use in various situations during pregnancy, especially in term gestations with alive fetus, because this could be an effective and unexpensive option if it were also safe.
