El autor bosqueja el proceso histórico del noroeste amazónico, con referencia especial al territorio brasilero, peruano y colombiano, del siglo XVII al siglo XIX, tiempo durante el cual se vivió una permanente expoliación del indígena para hacerlo productivo a los intereses ibéricos. Durante el proceso, varios cultivos tuvieron importancia comercial internacional, especialmente el caucho, el cacao y la quina.
Pineda Camacho acompaña su ensayo de cuadros que permiten visualizar la situación estadística y demográfica en el período considerado.
