Abstract. The globalization project has led to the reformulation of the nation-state, particularly in regard to its level of autonomy and sovereignity in the realms of social, political and economic regulation. With its time-space compression and progressive global economic integration, globalisation has also brought with it an augmentation of migratory movements; a progression that has challenged previous notions of identity, belonging and community. It is argued that such developments render obsolete, conceptions of the nation-state as a static, non-leaking container, culminating in the rise of a new phenomenon —transnationalism— which not only challenges the nation-state project but also the present and future relevance of certain social sciences.
