Abstract. This article begins with the fi rst approximations of Jorge Enrique Isaacs Ferrer (1837- 1895) to literatura in 1860, and examines analytically and biographically his 35 years of the literary, journalistic, political, and scientifi c production of the author of María (1867) and Estudio sobre las tribus indígenas del Magdalena (1884); shows his permanent interest in ethnology, in addition to his successes, indecisione, failures and frustrations in economic and political topics, all of which was represented in an unstable, itinerant life between Cauca, Bogotá, Santiago de Chile, Antioquia, and Ibagué, just like the transistions between literature and ethnology.
