Abstract

In the beginning of the text the general characteristics of Max Gluckman’s anthropology and the Manchester School he created, first in Northern Rhodesia and later on in the Victoria University in Manchester. It is usually assumed that Max Gluckman continued the stye he had inherited from his teachers, principally Radcliffe-Brown and Bronislaw Malinowski: strustual-functionalism and functionalism. It is suggested that that is not the case, and the relationship of the Manchester School and Marxist theory is explored. In another text Leif Korsbaek has suggested that Max Gluckman’s anthropology is really Marxist theory translated into anthropological terms; in this text it is concluded that that is an exaggeration, but there is some truth in it, and for that reason it is important to keep in mind that the Manchester School was born during the years of the welfare state in the British empire.
