Abstract

The Maximal Oxygen Consumption (max VO2), Maximal Physical Work Capacity (max PWC) and Physical Work Capacity at 170 beats per minute (PWC j 79) were determined in 1218 male and female top level athletes from the Departamento of Antioquia (Colombia) in the period 1985-1992. The evaluations were made by using an ergoespyrometrical open circuit system (Ergooxiscreen Jaeger) in a laboratory at 1500 meters above sea level, 25 celcius degrees and 65 % relative humidity. By running on motorized treadmill (quinton treadmill 1845) according with the Kindermann et al protocol (1980) were evaluated long distance male and female runners (LDR),male and female triathletes (TTH)jiu-jitzu male and female fighters (JJ), basketball male and female players (BK) and male players from soccer (SC),soccer indoor (SI), taekwondo (TK) and also male weight lifters (WL) and male wrestlers (W). By cycling on a electrodynamic braked cycle (Jaeger) according with the Hollmann and Venrath protocol (1963) were evaluated male and female swimmers (SW), male and female rollerskaters (RSK), male cycling runners (CY), water polo male players (WP) and female synchronized swimmers (SS). The LDR and TTH male and female runners and male CY have shown the best result in max VO2, max PWC and PWC170 . On the other hand, SS and the female swimmmers have shown the worst result for all the parameters, which was possibly originated in lacking of a good physical preparation. By comparing with other studies, a similar level of aerobic performance and PWC is found, although in a few sports the results are lower. A striking finding was established by comparing the max PWC between the males and females in LDR, BK, TTH where the sportwomcn have presented a similar or a light higher level, indicating possibly a better eficience in the running by kilograme of body weight.
