Socio-critical reading of El hombre de Talara of Arturo Echeverri Mejía

The object of this article is, from a sociocriticism view point, to observe how an expression of the protagonist —“The gringos of the Wellbor say that their filthy oil serves to remedy”—, the fact that it comes from a social practice and discursive or doxa, will determine the destiny of the protagonists and of the Fishermen of Talara in the novel El hombre de Talara by Arturo Echeverri Mejía. This expression that arises from a capitalist economic circumstance and a dominant cultural subject penetrates and affects the will of the protagonists to the point of generating in them an interpersonal conflict. We are interested in showing the reader how a once-only expression determines the course of the novel and reveals what is underlying socio-ideologically beneath the simple anecdote.
