Abstract

The cumulative traumatic disorders (CTD) are muscle and skeletal disorders related with occupational activities as a consequence of extra use of any body part due to the repetition and overstrenght required in some duties. These problems are important causes of medical consultation in laboral populations. The purpose of this study was to describe the situation of these disorders in workers of the Gerencia Complejo Barrancabermeja (GCB), of Ecopetrol, between September 1996 and August 1997. From 2,775 workers the prevalence of these disorders was 15.86% affecting mainly the lumbar region (9.87%), shoulder (3.03), and neck (2.34). As an special finding the frequency of tunnel carpal syndrome was lower than expected (0.54%). The CTD risk increases as age and time in the job increases. The DTA prevalence was significantly higher in conventional workers compared with directive personnel, and there were not differences according to gender. There were 693 days of absence caused by CTD, with a frequency index of 17.1 absences by one million worker labored hours. The average cost was $1.092.972 by worker. When the findings of lumbar problems were compared with studies done before in the enterprise, a lower frequency in the average number of consultations for this cause was noted. The repetitive consultation for this cause is not a problem in this enterprise. As a conclusion, this study gives information about the higher magnitude of the CTD problem in the enterprise and the necesity of implementing epidemiological surveillance systems to facilitate the control of ergonomic risk factors asociated with this kind of disorders.
