ESTUDIO DE MORTALIDAD POR ENFERMEDADES CARDIOVASCULARES EN LA CIUDAD DE MEDELLIN, 1978
Abstract
In Dr. Ruth Rice Puffer's study. Characteristics of Urban Mortality (1), carried out in twelve cities in Europe and America, it was found that heart disease is the main cause of death in eight of the cities studied and a prominent place in adult mortality. A decline in cerebral hemorrhage, an increase in cerebral infarction and ischemic heart disease were also observed.
Bogota presented the highest rates for: embolism, cerebrovascular and arteriosclerosis of the heart. Mexico and Bogota showed the highest rates for reu- matic heart diseases, which occur more frequently at higher altitudes (2).
The O.P.S. (3) reports that in Colombia, mortality from heart disease in 1975 had a rate of 103.6 per 100,000 inhabitants and the following behavior according to age groups:
