Abstract

The procedure followed in the adjustment of indexes within the context of Scientific Research Methodology is presented in a didactic way. Its application is extremely useful in the analysis of data from the field of health and, in particular, in epidemiological and/or demographic analyses.
PROBLEM
When comparing the rates or proportions of a given variable (e.g. mortality) between several sets (e.g. population A vs. population B), it is common to find that such sets are not in “equal conditions” with respect to a certain factor (e.g. age) that affects the behavior of the variable we are measuring and comparing and whose effect we wish to eliminate in the comparison.
