Abstract

As part of an investigation conducted by the same authors in 1999 on the odontologists work market in Medellín, this article analyses the characteristics of the demand of these professionals based on a sample of 303 odontologists working in this city. These professionals are characterized by being young adults with an average age of 40 years. 65% of them studied at the Universidad de Antioquia and 22% at the CES. 47% comes from paternal homes located in the two highest socioeconomic strata. Compared with these, the
professionals have achieved certain social mobility, while those formed outside the paternal sphere reach in 62% of the cases the two highest strata. Nearly 39% of the odontologists work in two or more institutions. However, this multiemployment does not derive in excesses of the labor day. In fact, 77% work less than 45 hours a week, which corresponds with the high proportion of underemployed professionals (45%). The average antiquity in the work ascends to 8.3 years, with statistically significant differences among those that
work in the private sector (7.4 years) and those that work in the public sector (10.9 years).Nevertheless, the current proportion of employment storm is not worthless (7.3%).The average wage of an odontologist in the city of Medellín ascends to $1'813.862 monthly, with statistically significant differences among those graduated ($1'695.689) and those postgraduated ($2'166.382).
