Abstract

Myasis is the infestation of organs and tlssues by larvae of deferent species of files. There were two pathways in the bio-phylogenetic evolution of myasis, namely: a) a Iine started with ancestors that fed on other insects and acquired hematophagic habitat; later they became obligatory parasites of vertebrates. b) The second line started with polyphagic ancestors that fed on decomposing organic matter and became parasites by proximity to other organisms of the same ecological habitat; these forms of evolution may be the explanation for the various types of parasitism of present day files. Myasis causes different syndromes according to the affected site; It may even, In some cases, cause death. The skin is most frequently Involved but In rare cases there has been invasion of eyes, nose, paranasal sinuses, urogenital tract and rectum. In these Instances associated conditions have usually been present, Iike previous injuries or purulent discharge that attract adult files. In Colombia and other neotropical countries Myasis is regularly observed but there Is a lack of accurate statistics on It. This review intends to contribute to a better knowledge of this disease.
