Borderline Personality Disorder: Clinical-Phenomenological and Therapeutic Update

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) represents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in clinical settings. There is a variable prevalence of the disorder according to the different observation scenarios, ranging from 2% in the general population and up to 15-28% of patients hospitalized in psychiatric units. A borderline personality disorder is characterized by four groups of symptoms: multi-impulsiveness, mood instability, interpersonal problems, and identity disorders, and they present a high risk of suicide in situations that generate frustration. The diagnostic difficulties associated with the approach of these patients can lead to unsuccessful pharmacological interventions, with psychotherapy being the axis of treatment.
