Psychology and Neoliberalism: The Governance of Oneself and of the Others

In this reflection article derived from research, we analyze how the disciplinarization of Psychology has supported the governmental interests of neoliberalism. With the ontology of the present as a methodological guide, we initially argue how Psychology has been functional for the government of individuals in recent decades, since the insertion of psychological practices and knowledge in the governmental sphere transformed the approach that is made of the individual and social problems, impacting both the intimacy of people, as well as community and political life. Based on the above, we conclude that the psychologization of everyday life dismisses the sociopolitical component of life and produces a generalized guilt that appears as a
response to the subjects’ feeling of permanent insufficiency. Finally, we present some possibilities of escape from the cycle of suffering brought about by the amalgamation between contemporary governmentality and therapeutic culture.
