Abstract

Street harassment is one of the most predominant forms of violence in Latin America, bringing about various psychological consequences for those who experience it. Members of society evaluate the appropriate justice response to this form of violence following their psychological orientation for justice. This experimental vignette study assesses the effect of the type (physical, verbal, or behavioral) and consequences (short- or long-term) of street harassment on justice preferences when evaluating different hypothetical cases of harassment. Results show that the type of harassment affects the preferred concrete justice intervention to be used against the perpetrators, but not the severity of the consequences. Additionally, participants with a more retributive orientation tend to prefer more demanding justice mechanisms, compared to those with a more restorative orientation.
